La Via Campesina; the history of the movement, how we organise and what we do

The Landworkers’ Alliance hosts Nettie Wiebe from the National Farmers Union of Canada and Paul Nicholson from the Basque farmers union Ehne Bizkia to explore the history, politics and governance of the grassroots international peasant and small scale farmers movement La Via Campesina (LVC). Paul and Nettie take us back to the early days of the formation of LVC and tell the story of the birth of the movement and how it grew to be the inspiration and force that it is today. This is a history lesson that no farmer or food activist can afford to miss out on!

#SaveOurStandards Pumpkin Action (2020)

On Halloween 2020, we carved and lit 1000 pumpkins on Parliament Square to call on the Government to protect our food trade standards in the Agriculture Bill, and ask MPs to vote for Amendment 16B.

Farming, Food and Climate Justice March (2019)

In October 2019, hundreds of landworkers and allies made the journey to London to stand together and demand an immediate transition to food and farming policies that work for people, planet and climate. We are bringing the movements for farming, food and climate justice together to stand up for a farming system that protects farmers livelihoods and produces nutritious, affordable food for everyone without destroying the planet.

Good Food March (2018)

Hundreds of farmers and food activists from all over the country join Good Food March through central London.

Driving tractors, and bearing placards that demanded support good food and farming in the agricultural bill, over five hundred people marched and drove from Parliament Square to the Bargehouse Gallery on the Southbank.

The march was organized by a collaboration of organisations including the Landworkers’ Alliance, The Gaia Foundation, the Soil Association and Sustain and was timed to coincide with the passage of the UK Agricultural Bill through Parliament and World Food Day on Tuesday, 16th October. The march highlighted the need for the Bill to provide support for farmers producing good food for local and regional markets.

Despite the rain, hundreds of farmers, of all ages, travelled to Westminster from across the UK. Some arrived on tractors and others carried farming equipment and bore placards that said “Resistance is fertile” and “Do you carrot at all about public health?” and “Don’t let the budget for farming leek away”.

More Farmers, Better Food (2018)

In the spring of 2018 the future of our farming system is going to be decided in a new post-Brexit Agriculture Policy. This will define the future of agriculture in the U.K. It is the most significant moment in generations and it is absolutely urgent that we ensure we have a place at the decision making tables.

Now, more than ever, the Landworkers’ Alliance need to use all the energy and resources we have to influence this policy making process and make sure our voices are heard, our livelihoods defended and that a fair food system for all is guaranteed. In order to make this happen we need your help.

We want to see power put back in the hands of producers and local communities rather than supermarkets and industrial processors. We believe that farmers and communities must be at the heart of decision-making and have a strong voice in agricultural policy making.

The Landworkers’ Alliance stands for a food system where everybody has access to healthy, regionally produced, affordable food from farmers they can trust. A post-Brexit Agriculture policy must guarantee the wellbeing of people, the health of the environment and the ability of future generations to provide for themselves.

A Place at the Table (2017)

A film about the ‘Place at the table’ event in 2017. The event, which was held outside Defra offices, featured a feast of high-quality, fresh produce from LWA members farms. The day was focused on launching the LWAs post-Brexit policy proposals, highlighting the exclusion of organisations representing smaller scale producers from policy and calling for more equal access to decision making spaces.

Farm Hack (2015)

A film about the first UK FarmHack gathering which was organised by the LWA in 2015. FarmHack is a forum for farmers and growers developing appropriate tools for small scale agroecological farming to share their ideas and skills. FarmHack events bring together farmers, growers, fabricators, engineers and IT programmers to demonstrate and share tools, skills and ideas. FarmHack operates on the principles of open source technology meaning that tools and techniques are also shared and developed on the international online forum farmhack.net.

Food Sovereignty Football (2014)

On World Food Day family farmers united take on agribusiness FC in a match that will shape the future of our food and farming. With a powerful line up of some of the biggest corporations in food and farming, agribusiness FC wield a powerful team. But Family Farmers United have fed the British people for generations and do so while protecting our environment and building strong rural communities.

The game is in the hands of the referee, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and as the match progresses his allegiances become clear.
